Why Your GTA Home Needs a Water Softener: The Benefits You Cannot Ignore

If you are experiencing hard water and notice a white chalky layer forming on the faucets, or your skin is dry and irritated despite using moisturizing products, you are likely suffering from hard water. This is not a fault in your cleaning practices – it is just a fact of the mineral-rich water supply that provides the majority of Southern Ontario. Hard water is harmless to drink, but there are many harmful effects on your home, your finances, and your comfort.

We will delve into the unique issues hard water brings to the GTA and discuss the transformative advantages of the water softener. Whether you are looking to save your valuable appliances, lower your energy costs, or even get healthier skin and hair, a water softener is one of the best things you can invest in as a homeowner.

Understanding the Hard Water Reality in the GTA

Hard water has a lot of minerals, especially calcium and magnesium. These particles are picked up as water filters through the ground and over rock beds to the municipal system. The geology of the GTA is such that water hardness is always high. Throughout Southern Ontario, the hardness is found to be between 200 and 300 parts per million or about 12 to 18 grains per gallon, and is officially termed “very hard”.

Unlike other minerals that are filtered out in regular municipal water treatment, these minerals pass through with the water without being removed. Soft water is a luxury for some neighbors in other parts of Canada, but those in Toronto, Mississauga, Brampton, and Oakville have to deal with calcium and magnesium deposits. You can see the evidence on your shower doors and inside your kettle, but not inside your pipes. The first step towards solving home water quality issues is to recognize that this is a regional problem.

Protection against Costly Plumbing and Appliance Damage

The biggest financial gain to having a water softener is the effect it has on the “underground” infrastructure of your house. The silent saboteur is hard water. As the water is heated over and over in your tank or tankless water heater or as it trickles slowly through your pipes, the calcium and magnesium release from the water and liquefy into scale.

This scale deposits inside the pipes like plaque in a person’s artery and slowly shrinks the diameter of the pipe, and hampers the flow of water.

This scale accumulation causes internal parts of appliances, such as washing machines, dishwashers, and coffee makers, to work much harder. In a water heater, in particular, the scale is used as an insulator. The heating element must use more energy to warm the water by passing through a layer of rock, which greatly decreases the efficiency and means it will fail much sooner. When installed, a water softener permanently alters the minerals by a process called ion exchange, preventing scale formation.

Doing this simple task can save you thousands of dollars in early replacement and emergency calls for plumbing and appliance repair, and will save your plumbing and appliances several years of service.

Significant Savings on Energy Bills and Detergents

When your appliances are leaking energy because of scale buildup, so do you. When a water heater is unable to penetrate mineral deposits, it takes a great deal more energy to do the same. The friction and insulation from hard water are a big part of the problem for homeowners who are not aware of it.

The hard water degrades the lathering properties of laundry powders, hand and body soaps, and shampoos, so more soap must be used to get the same clean feeling. You may have noticed your dishes are cloudy when you take them out of the dishwasher or that you have to use a Super Duty dishwasher cleaner to get rid of the soap scum from your shower tile. Hard water, on the other hand, makes soap harden and will not rinse off.

This saves you over 50% of your household use of cleaning products and laundry detergents, while keeping your glassware and clothes cleaner, and making them softer. A water softener is a self-funding investment over time because of the lower energy costs and lower cost of soaps and salts.

A Noticeable Improvement for Skin and Hair Health

The advantages of a water softener go far past just mechanical systems and into the comfort of your family. Chronic dry skin, eczema outbreaks, and straw-like hair that is brittle are related to the hardness of the water. The minerals will not rinse away fully, which means that you are essentially moving around with a layer of residues that clogs the pores and depletes the natural oils.

The difference is immediate when you use soft water. Use of soft water will mean that soap can rinse completely, leaving skin clean and smooth, not waxy or tight. Shampoos froth and thoroughly rinse your hair, restoring it with its natural moisture and luster.

Chronic skin problems are often greatly improved within a few weeks of a water softener installation, according to many homeowners, because hard minerals that caused chemical irritation to their skin were part of their daily routine before the water softener was installed.

Effortless Cleaning and Brighter Laundry

Most of the daily aggravation of hard water is how hard it is to clean. You polish up the faucet so that it looks shiny, but white crusty limescale appears right away the following day. Fogged-up film is unsolvable with regular glass cleaners on glass shower doors. This is because hard water deposits are very aggressive for bonding to surfaces. However, these deposits do not remain in soft water. Using soft water, surfaces remain cleaner for longer, and the luster you have achieved is retained.

The results in the laundry area are the same. The minerals of hard water hold dirt and soap (detector) in the fibers of fabric so that whites look gray and colors fade. Drying towels in hard water tends to leave the fibers in the towels rough, scratchy, and uneven due to the mineral crystals that become trapped between them.

Soft water will allow the detergent to remove dirt completely and will ensure the detergent is totally removed from the wash water. The result is that laundry is much softer, brighter, and fluffier without the use of any strong fabric softeners and overuse of detergents.

Environmentally Friendly and Financially Wise

The answer is usually not if your water is hard enough to require a softener, it is just how long you have been paying higher utility bills and feeling the discomfort of hard water. There is no doubt: soft water is good for your pipes, wallet, and skin. It is an improvement for the home that will save you money on utilities and extend the life of your appliances while advancing the family’s quality of life.

Having a water hardness test performed by a local water treatment professional is the first step in creating a softer, smarter home, and is the perfect solution for those who are tired of scrubbing limescale and feel dry after each shower.
