Methods for Preparing Your Central Air Conditioner for the Summer
Keep your Air Conditioner (AC) in top shape when the temperature rises. Although you have the option to schedule expert maintenance, there are a number of things you can do on your own. To make sure your central air conditioner is ready for summer without a hitch, once you have switched off the electricity, follow these steps:
Get the Air Filters Cleaned or Replaced
The air conditioner has to work more to chill your house if the filter is dirty or clogged, which reduces airflow. The furnace or air handler cabinet in the basement, utility room, or garage is the common location for the air filter. Find your air filter, then change it to save money on your utility bills this summer.
Rinse the Condenser Coils
Find the exterior unit that sits against the side of your house; there is usually where you can find the condenser. A large metal box with grille-like sides will be its appearance. Through the grilles, you ought to discern the fan blades. Take off the top and side panels by unscrewing them to clean the coils. Carefully clean the unit’s exterior and inside coils using a vacuum attachment with a soft brush.
Remove Condenser Debris
There can be junk buildup within the condenser if you did not cover it over winter. Scoop out any dirt or leaves from the base after you have cleaned the condenser coils, and then carefully wipe the fan blades with a soft cloth. Remove any overhanging branches or trees from the area around the unit to clear the airflow.
Run a Check on the Coolant Pipes
Be careful to observe the refrigerant lines and tubes leading into the condenser. In most cases, foam coolant line insulation will be used to cover them. If any insulation is missing or ragged, replace it.
After re-establishing electricity, set the thermostat to “cool” and check the air conditioner. If you hear any unusual sounds or if it is not functioning properly, call the professionals at Cambridge to schedule maintenance or repair.
